Renovating a home is not for the faint of heart--ESPECIALLY when you are living in it.
Just to recap a little bit, we moved into our new house on May 27th. Then we were set to travel to Europe on June 6th.
In between moving in and Europe, we completed some things:
- Ripping up carpets
- Scraping linoleum
Then we jetted off to another continent, and when we returned, we completed a lot more things, with our all-star team of Grandma & Grandpa, Sherry & Randy at different intervals.
- ALL new flooring down
- Paint paint paint paint
Then everybody left, and we painted some more. After being gone a grand total of SIX WEEKS this summer, I've had to learn how to cope with the mess, the disorganization, and simply the "unfinished" nature of our house, which is my least favorite of the feelings in the world.
I've uncovered some small tricks of the trade along the way, so I'll share them in little snippets here and there.
First, and foremost is my current predicament.
What do I do when the brand new, clean, cool colors of my cabinets and countertops (yay!) clash with the warm color (poop color, to be exact and way too graphic) of the wall?
- Take a deep breath, and remember that without the ginormous Apple computers in neon colors, we never would have the iPhone appendages we have now. There has to be a start in order for there to be a finish.
- Remember, secondly, now you can in fact wash dishes without the water ricocheting off the bottom of your two-inch-deep sink and lovingly splashing you in the face with your left-over-food-water. Three cheers for being able to wear white while you're cleaning!
- Finally, grab a stool, go up a couple steps, and snap a picture of your iced coffee from up high (skipping the unwanted color of the walls). Call it good for now.
Do you have any tricks for focusing on progress made rather than what's left?
**Now that I've typed that title, I don't know if I am even allowed to call myself "recovering" yet. Let's just say, I'm a perfectionist who has put herself on "the program." This means, I am working toward recovery, toward joy in the mess, toward a place of acceptance in The Middle rather than satisfaction only in Beginnings or Ends. Want to join me on the journey? I would love to cheer you on! Shoot me a message!
