You can always count on me for one thing, and pretty much only that one thing: Being overly enthusiastic.
I'm working with Hamilton in the classroom right now for our drama/media unit. I MIGHT BE ABLE TO DIE HAPPY NOW. My students keep saying as I'm introducing it, "Mrs. Pax, are you okay? Do you need a minute?" I may hyperventilate on a regular basis, but it's always for good reason.
I'm general a Fangirl about a lot of things, but those things currently include:
- Lin-Manuel Miranda
- Other creatives talking to/about Lin-Manuel Miranda
- Modern Celebrities/Creatives harkening back to a simpler, maybe better, way of life
- People who make a living reading other people; like inception, and stuff
- People who articulate common societal struggles, but don't claim to know everything
There is a lot of all of this going on in the world right now, so I thought I would be completely cliche and share a few of the things I'm currently Fangirling. Try not to disown me for being like every other blogger right now. YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THESE.
That one time Emma Watson interviewed Lin-Manuel Miranda, and everything in my world imploded with happiness at the end as he freestyled and she beatboxed, followed closely by sorting Hamilton characters into Hogwarts houses. It also took place via HeForShe, an organization supporting women being awesome and equal. SO MUCH LOVE IN ONE VIDEO, I CAN'T BE EXPECTED TO BE NORMAL ABOUT IT.
Side note: This may seem trivial, but I want a female role model to whom I feel so dedicated that I have a picture of her to remind me of where I want to go. Suggestions? Does Leslie Knope count? Have any ideas for me? It needs to be someone who aligns with my aspirations, beliefs, obsessions, and good looks. (JUST KIDDING. Geez.)
That one time my Hunk Hubby read a book written by a former FBI-Agent who was tasked with becoming friends with agents from the enemy-side and getting them to become double agents. FA-SCI-NA-TING.
That one guy who finally reached his 10,000 steps. If you are in my life and I have not yet told you about this, I must have been eating or drinking something. It's literally the first thing I've said after "hello" for the past week. If you haven't felt that "walker's high," what have you been doing with your life?
That one time Sarah Bessey said everything I wanted to about tension between being a Christian and a Feminist.
As I attempt to grapple with overcoming my former silence and attempt to speak out for what I believe in, I sometimes just need some things that blow my mind with creativity or inspiration, some things that are hilariously mundane, but so true, and some things that remind me it's okay to sit in the in between. These were that for me this past week. Let me know what you think!
Do you obsess over things easily--a.k.a. fangirl (fanboy?)--or are you an "eh, it was okay" kind of person? Let me know in the comments! Also, I'm taking submissions/suggestions for my true frame-next-to-mirror role model.
